If analysts’ predictions are correct, by this time next year our industry will be well on the road to consolidation. Tragically, that means many people who have worked in local television most of their lives will find themselves facing layoffs.
I wish there was another outcome possible, or even a better way to say this, but the whole point of consolidation is to reduce the number of competitors in markets across the country. Doing that automatically means many people will find themselves, as the British say, “surplus to requirements.”
Adding to the tragedy, most of the people at risk have no idea what may be coming. They simply go to work every day, do their best and assume nothing will change. For many, the announcement of a new owner, followed later by termination notices, will be their first inkling that they are actually going to lose their job.
Consolidation will affect every level, so if you are a department head, don’t think layoffs will be limited to the rank and file. Combined stations will not need two general managers, two news directors or two anything else.
In short, our industry is facing unprecedented upheaval. No one should assume they will come out unscathed, so start planning your future now.
You need two plans. The first will be how to give yourself the best chance to be picked for a job with your new employer. The second will be how to build a new career in another industry.
