WPLG (Local 10), Berkshire Hathaway’s television station in Miami-Fort Lauderdale, said today that on Aug. 4, the station will go from producing 56 hours of live news and sports programming to 93 hours each week. The change follows news a week ago that Disney is moving WPLG’s former ABC affiliation to a subchannel of Sunbeam Television’s WSVN.
WPLG will air Local 10 News Monday-Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., noon-1 p.m., 3-7 p.m. and 9-11:30 p.m. On weekends Local 10 News will air 5-11 a.m., 5-7 p.m., 9-9:30 p.m. and 11-11:30 p.m.
In addition, sports programming is also expanding. On Saturdays, Local 10 Sports will have 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. editions and a Sunday 9:30 p.m. edition to complement the current Lexus Sports Sunday at 11:30 p.m.
The station said: “While networks and stations across the country are reducing staff through layoffs, WPLG is hiring.” WPLG President-CEO E.R. Bert Medina said: “We have posted dozens of positions and more to come. WPLG is the legacy broadcaster in South Florida and we will continue to be the premiere local station in this market as we build the local broadcast model for the 21st century. In addition to the news expansion, we will create other live, local content throughout the year. Today we are announcing phase one of our expansion. There is much more to come.”
WPLG also airs subchannels with MeTV South Florida and Heroes & Icons Network in addition to Local10.com.
