On Sept. 19, the UN’s high-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence (HLAB-AI) released seven key recommendations for global AI governance. But what does this 101-page “Governing AI for Humanity” report mean for media organizations? These suggestions promise to have profound implications across various sectors, including the local media industry, a cornerstone for disseminating information and shaping public opinion.

The recommendations proposed by the UN advisory body are designed to ensure a balanced, ethical, and globally coherent approach to AI governance:
Establish an international scientific panel on AI — This panel would serve as a reservoir of unbiased scientific knowledge about AI, aiming to bridge information asymmetries between leading AI labs and the global community. Create a new policy dialogue on AI governance — This initiative would foster intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder meetings to enhance regulatory interoperability and establish common grounds in AI governance. Develop an AI standards exchange — Involving various stakeholders, this exchange aims to ensure technical interoperability of AI systems across borders, crucial for seamless global operations. Form a global AI capacity development network — This network would bolster AI governance capacities by offering training, compute resources and AI datasets to researchers and social entrepreneurs globally. Establish a global AI fund — Addressing gaps in capacity and collaboration, this fund would empower local efforts to further the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through enhanced access to AI resources.
